How to make “gojuhimo” band

GO to ENGLISH TOP

Kimono dressers usually use “sanjuhimo” or a triple band. It is a kind of string with 3 elastic bands to secure a obi shape.

It is very useful and gives us easy tying obi and originality, especially for “furisode”.

Today, I’ll show you how to make “goju-himo” which have 5 bands.

It is more useful than 3 bands.

For example,

  • When you use obi that you can’t or don’t want to make a knot,
  • When you want more creative design,
  • When you wan to reduce the number of strings,
  • When you wore “furisode”, and you want to tie the obi by yourself,

“gojuhimo” works effectively.

And because it is handmade, it can be made in colors that match the obi and kimono.

Things you prepare

  • Elastic band (20 mm x 150 cm) : thin / for underwear
  • 2 tapes (20 mm x 50 cm each)
  • Sewing kit
  • Glue for sewing

A thin elastic band is recommended. If not, it gets thick and difficult to use.

How to make “goju-himo”

put the tape between the folded band

1. Fold the 150 cm elastic band like an accordion and put the tape between the folds.

2. Glue the tape and band together. It makes the band strong against pulling force.

3. Clip them all together. Please wait for a while.

4. When half dry, sew together.

5. Half back stitches are good for this. Do the same thing to the other side.

finifhed!

6. It’s finished!

There’s an example how to use “sanjuhimo”, a triple band in Japanese. I’ll post how to use “gojuhimo”, a quintuple band later.
