GO to ENGLISH TOP

Hi, kimono lovers!

Are you always careful to match the patters of obi?

If you get these tips once, you won’t be upset when tying a new obi.

Thing s you prepare

  • Fukuro obi (rokutsu gara)
  • obi makura pad
  • gauze (about 30 cm x your height)
  • kari himo string
  • 3 clips
  • obijime cord
  • obiage cloth

Let’s see how to match patterns of “rokutu-gara” which the patterns occupy 60 % of entire  “fukuro obi”.

The length is 4.4 meters. (I recommend over 4.3 meters.)

It has two “gara-domari” or borders.

Clip the 3 positions

Are you ready?

帯幅

1. Place the obi inside out. “Tare-saki” is facing left.

Fold the “tare-saki” into a triangle. That means taking one width of obi.

3 clips' positions

2. Take three times of the width of obi, and clip there. Take more three times and clip there. This is the six times of the width of obi.

Fold the obi into half from the clip of the six times to the “te-saki”.

Clip the border of patterns.

Tie the obi

So let’s tie the obi by using a temporary string!

The method of tying “nijutaiko” in detail is here.

3. Put the “te-saki” on the shoulder temporarily.

Put the clip of the border onto the center back and wrap the obi once.

Then pinch the obi at the center back and pull it down. (We call it “ya no ha wo hiku”.)

4. Where is the clip of the “tare” border?

Set the 6-time clip between the left side and the the right side. (See the black arrows.)

Wrap the obi again.

In the case of a double layer “otaiko”, the border of the tare pattern is basically centered on the back. Adjust it between the left side to the center back depending on the length of obi or your body size. If you move it to the right side, the “te-saki” will become shorter.

5-1. What does the front pattern look like?

This photo is the front of 4. It is the best position for the main pattern to come to one of the black arrows.

The 6-time clip is on the center back.

5-2. The 6-time clip is on the left side. (See the black circle.)

Their impressions are different.

The front pattern is gorgeous, but in the case of this obi the “otaiko” pattern did not come out well.

6. Confirm the position.

Where is your “te-saki“?

If you don’t use clips, please remember your position.

7. Place a pad for obi on the line of red (1/3) or the black (1/2). It depends on the patterns and your height.

枕の持ち方

This is how to hold the obi and pad while matching pattern together. As shown in the photo below, make sure that the pattern of the back and the “otaiko” part are in the same position. Please see how to tie a double layer “otaiko” for other steps.

8. Keep the position of the pad and hang the “tare” down.

The difference of the length between “tare” and “otaiko” part should be made 5 cm or more.

Setting the first-coming pattern is easy to make the double layer. The second is a little bit difficult.

9. “Otaiko” was made.

Are the patterns of “otaiko” and “tare”  connected?

(Oops! Wrinkles are on the “otaiko”! Remove them before tying obi!)

柄合わせNG

Connect the patterns as much as possible. It looks beautiful.

So please look for the best way to match patterns of your obi!
